- INFO -

Garfield is a fictional cat and the protagonist of the comic strip of the same name, created by Jim Davis. The comic strip centers on Garfield, portrayed as a lazy, fat, and cynical orange persian/tabby cat. He is noted for his love of lasagna and sleeping, and his hatred of Mondays, fellow cat Nermal and exercise.

Garfield was born on June 19, 1978, in the kitchen of Mamma Leoni's Italian Restaurant. As a kitten, he develops a taste for lasagna, which would become his favorite food. Because of his appetite, the owner of Mamma Leoni's has to choose between giving away Garfield or closing down his restaurant; so Garfield is sold to a pet shop. Garfield is adopted from the store by Jon Arbuckle on August 19, 1978. In his cartoon appearances, Garfield usually causes mischief in every episode.

- RUNDOWN -

Garfield is basically a "jack of all trades" of sorts. Most of his moves are ground-based but two specials and two hypers work well in the air as well. He has a few moves that have him play keep away, as most of his moves rely on getting up close and personal with the opponent. Remote Possibilities is his trap-based special, as while 2/3 of the moves stun, one has a better chance of hitting and the car is best for tripping an opponent (blocking or not).

That being said, it's not all perfect, his moves are easy to block and counter and Remote Possibilities is easy to dodge... as well as the latter being able to hurt him as well.

- MOVELIST -

Basic Mechanics:

Throw: F, MP (while close to opponent)
Dodge: MP+MK; hold back or forward to roll in that direction
Recovery Roll: hold forward/back while in the lie down state
Guard Push: Any two punches while blocking
Counter: Any two kicks while blocking

Specials:

D, DF, F, (punch) - Hackin' Hairballs (Air OK)
Garfield hacks out a hairball, pretty much his version of the Hadouken. Pushes further away when an opponent is hit up close.

F, D, DF, (punch) - Cat Cannonball
Garfield leaps into the air and assumes the cannonball position, knocking down anyone in his way.

D, DF, F, (kick) - Cat Pounce
Garfield leaps towards the opponent, knocking them back. How far he leaps depends on button strength.

D, DB, B, (punch) - Happy Day (Air OK)
Garfield twists and spins around a set amount of times before finishing with a large knockback.

light = 3 hits; knockback on 3rd hit
medium = 5 hits; knockback on 5th hit
heavy = 7 hits; knockback on 7th hit

D, DB, B, (kick) - Remote Possibilities
Garfield sends out an item to control with a remote. Strength determines what item is sent out, while performing the move again activates the item. The move has a 3-second cooldown after being used or a 5-second cooldown when the TV explodes. All 3 moves are unblockable in a way.

light = Alarm Clock - stuns the opponent in place. Deals no damage, but useful for setting the opponent up for a combo.
medium = RC Car - Drives forward, acting as a slightly stronger, forward-moving version of the trip. Unblockable unless crouching.
heavy = TV - Turned on, Binky the Clown does his signature "HEY, KIDS!" Knocks opponents back; works like an upgraded version of the Alarm Clock.
(While Garfield can move after the TV is hit, he has a limited time to react as the TV explodes, and will take him with it.)

Supers:

D, DF, F, 2P - Chili con Flame (Air OK)
Garfield, having had some really spicy chili beforehand and unable to stand the heat, ends up breathing fire on any poor souls in his way.
(1000 power required)

D, DF, F, 2K - Caped Avenger (Air OK)
Garfield assumes his Caped Avenger persona and takes flight straight ahead. Don't ask how he can fly.
(1000 power required)

D, DB, B, 2P - What's On Now?
Garfield accidentally changes the opponent into Nermal, to which he gets the bright idea to... drop a piano on them. Unblockable projectile but can be easily dodged. Semi-cinematic hyper.

This move also has a 5-second cooldown after a successful use.
(2000 power required)

D, DB, B, 2K - TBD

 (3000 power required)

You cannot use What's On Now? while the cooldown for Remote Possibilities is active, and vice versa. You also can't perform the hyper if a Remote Possibilities item is on screen or active.

- Things to note -

The sprites in this character are alligned with certain aspects that fit Garfield's design. As a result, certain actions like crouching will look weird on some stages made from 2D platformers without a different ground to compensate for certain fighting game characters. In addition, some characters use different ways to tackle HitDefs, and because of the more... unique hurt animations for hitting the ground and such, expect some weird behaviors depending on your opponent/who you're playing as.

To be able to see the cooldown timer in 16:9 resolutions, an options file is included to tweak that. It is set to be viewed in a 4:3 resolution by default. You can also tweak if you want the launcher to act more like the Marvel vs. Capcom games as well.

- Usage/Distribution of everything -

You can use the main sprites for whatever you want (edits/resprites, another MUGEN incarnation, etc.) as long as you credit the people involved with the sprites in the credits above.

You're free to edit/use the coding how you like, just make sure to credit everyone involved.

You are free to give this character a AI patch. You don't even need to ask, just make sure the original character is credited to Garfieldfan and WlanmaniaX.

You're free to upload this onto a site that ISN'T MUGEN Archive, or you can link to the original Google Drive link as a found release on another MUGEN fourm. AI patches don't count for the Archive thing but please don't bundle the character with it.

You cannot spriteswap this character. This ain't gonna stop anyone from doing so, just know it's one of the laziest (and in a good bit of cases, also most disrespectful) things to do in creating MUGEN content.
